A short introduction to the transcription
The source for the diplomatic transcription is the incunabulum Venice 1490. There are two online sources for the same Venice 1490 incunabulum: one found on the MDZ website (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/0004/bsb00045496/ images/index.html?id=00045496&groesser=&fip=qrsfsdrqrsweayaqrsxs&no=13&seite=1), and one on the SIEPM website (http: //capricorn.bc.edu/siepm/DOCUMENTS/ALPHONSUS%20VARGAS/AlphonsusVargas_InPrimumSent (Venice1490).pdf). This transcription was made using the SIEPM version, whose page numbering starts with the Prologue (thus leaving the introduction and the tabula uncovered). The MDZ edition starts the page numbering with the first blank page of the incunabulum. The aim is to offer both numbering systems, so that the reader can find his way in both witnesses; for now, the page numbers found in the transcription are those from the SIEPM version, which was the support for the transcription.
Alphonsus Vargas’ commentary is divided into distinctions. Each distinction is divided into questions that are further subdivided into articles. There is another type of division found in the text and which refers to Vargas’ textual sources. Inside a question the reader will find headings like “Bernardus Oliverius in I, distinctione 1, questione 1, articulo 3, parte 2”, and then “Responsio ad Bernardum”. These headings might not have been in the manuscript, but the editor of the incunabulum added them as such and organized the text accordingly, which is why, given that this is a diplomatic transcription, I will follow the same system.
